From start to finish, craftsmanship quality is the focus to achieve heirloom rugs that are made to last a lifetime and more.
1. Sourcing the raw material
Sourcing high-quality wool is the first and essential step of the making process of our rugs. The wool we use at Berber Creations comes directly from carefully selected Berber nomads in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. Not only it guarantees we get the finest quality but it also allows us to make sure all the participants in the making of our rugs are treated fairly and ethically.
2. Hand spinning of the wool
After being carefully washed, the wool is then hand-spun in the traditional way using a Hand Spindle, This spinning process transforms the wool. It twists fibers together and makes a yarn that is resistant enough to be woven.
3. Dyeing
The yarn is dyed by hand using all-natural spice, plant, and herb blends. the wool yarns are dyed in small batches so that the process can be controlled to perfection. Once dyed, the yarn is then naturally dried for a few days under the sun.
4. Weaving on the loom
Weaving is an art by itself which is often passed down from mother to daughter. Each rug is made on a vertical loom. Set up by hand. Every individual knot on a Berber hand-knotted rug is weaved by hand, row after row, using the Berber knot technique. Rugs and weaving held an important role in the life of the Berber people. The patterns, symbols, and colors they weaved into their rugs were influenced by their cultural and religious beliefs.
5. Washing
Before being sent to you, The weaved Berber rug will be washed several times using fresh water and Eco-friendly And Plant-Based household detergent. Any dust or dirt that’s become knotted in the yarn is thoroughly washed out using a rake that squeezes water through the pile. Washing also helps soften the rugs, restore the original shine of the wool, and creating a luxurious feel.
6. Drying & Finishing
After drying under the sun for a few days, final touches in the form of Shearing and clipping can be applied again if necessary. Your one-of-a-kind Berber rug is now ready to be sent, only a few more days and you will receive it at your door.
